Test and diagnostics
Autovet specializes in smog checks (both test-only and STAR-directed), as well Vehicle Safety Systems Inspections (a replacement for the brake and lamp inspections discontinued by the state), on all types of vehicles from motorcycles to heavy-duty (over 10,000 lb.) trucks, foreign and domestic. The following list provides prices* for the most common services:
SMOG CHECK
BRAKE AND LAMP INSPECTIONS
Effective September 27, 2024, brake and lamp inspection programs are no longer available in the State of California. As required by Assembly Bill 471, the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) replaced the brake and lamp inspection programs with a more comprehensive Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection (VSSI) program (for more information, see REPAIRER DRIVEN NEWS: California Starts Repaired Salvage Inspection Program). Keep in mind that while California DMV no longer accepts brake and lamp inspection certificates, some DMV workers may still refer to the new VSSI program as "brake and lamp inspection". For the available VSSI services and costs, see the next section.
VEHICLE SAFETY SYSTEMS INSPECTIONS (VSSI)
In addition to checking brakes and lamps, the new Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection program requires inspections of body structure, steering and suspension, tires and wheels, and passenger compartment.
